Bita Daryabari Scholarship for Women in Economics

Bita Daryabari founder and President of Unique Zan Foundation in Redwood City, CA, who is passionate about education, health, and economic opportunities for women throughout the world, has established the “Bita Daryabari Scholarship for Women in Economics”. The scholarship will be granted to Persian-speaking women who have been admitted to economics PhD programs in one of the twenty of the highly-respected institutions. Says Daryabari "I am committed to helping women establish themselves in positions of leadership and be role models to other women".
 
One grant of up to $30,000 per academic year will be awarded to cover tuition, fees, books and materials, and living expenses for a first-year PhD student studying economics. This is a one time grant per student. It was awarded in 2007, 2008 and will be awarded again in 2010.

Criteria:
   
- The applicant must be a Persian-speaking woman
- The applicant must have gained admission to a PhD Economics programs in one of the following twenty institutions:
 
· Harvard University
· University of Chicago
· Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
· University of California- Berkeley
· Stanford University
· Northwestern University
· University of Pennsylvania
· London School of Economics (LSE)
· Columbia University
· Cornell University
· University of California-San Diego
· University of California-Los Angeles
· University of Wisconsin–Madison
· University of Michigan-Ann Arbor
· California Institute of Technology
· Brown University
· Duke University
· Oxford University
· University of Minnesota
· University of Cambridge
 
- Grants will be based on merit and academic achievement

   
Process:
   
Selection of Recipients:
 
- The scholarship will be awarded to an eligible first year Economics PhD student by an independent selection committee
- The selection committee will review applications and other submitted documents to select finalists
- Finalists will be contacted for a phone or in-person interview
- The recipient will be selected from the pool of finalists and will be notified by either mail or email
 
Deadlines:
Application Due Date:           April 1
Applicant Interviews:             April 9-12
Recipient Notification Date: April 15
 
Recipient Responsibilities:
Recipient will submit academic transcripts at the end of each semester and written report at the end of the academic year. Failure to do so could result in the withholding of further payments. If all or any part of the grant is being diverted from the purposes of supporting the recipient as a first-year PhD student, all steps (including legal action) will be taken to recover the grant funds and/ or to ensure restoration of the diverted funds.
